Eccentric Adam Lambert Talks Image, Sound and New Album

Adam Lambert, before anything, is a very accomplished singer, critics agree. However, it’s not just that that’s made him so popular with audiences worldwide even before he released a music album, a very rare occurrence these days. The difference between him and other up and coming talented artists is that he knows how to sell himself, a thing he’s the first to admit to. In a recent interview with Reuters, Lambert – Glambert for his fans – talks anything from his out of the ordinary but very appealing image, his sound and the influences that shaped it in the long run, and the upcoming album, his official debut in showbiz. For starters, the singer notes, his “mission” in music is to bring back the fun of it, while also paying a due homage to old rock. This was the driving force behind the “For Your Entertainment” album, but that’s not to say that people should take it too seriously either. Lambert is made of paradoxes, it would seem, and the same applies to his music. “I think there are a lot of throwback elements to [the album]. There is a lot of 70s and 80s influence. The first track has a little bit of kitschy-ness to it. But ‘For Your Entertainment’ has a very current pop / dance with a kind of T-Rex feel. I didn&rsquo...

LHC Is Back Online

Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the group that manages the Large Hadron Collider, announced that the first proton beams had already been injected in the massive particle accelerator, and that they had completed thousands of spins in its tunnels. The 27-kilometer-long facility saw the injection of a clockwise-circulating beam on Friday. CERN officials revealed that a stable beam was established at 10 PM local time last night, ZDNet reports. The CERN Twitter feed also states that an additional beam of protons, circulating anticlockwise, was introduced in the accelerator's tunnels later yesterday, and that both streams have already completed thousands of rotations inside the Collider. This is the crowning of more than a year of around-the-clock repairs on the world's most advanced physics experiment ever. The $10 billion project saw the collaboration of more than 3,000 scientists from around the world, all working together for the accelerator's initially planned start, in September 2008.“The LHC is up and running regularly. Operators are adjusting and testing obedient beams,” the Twitter feed added. “The LHC is a far better understood machine than it was a year ago. We've learned from our experience, and engineered the technology that allows us to move on,” added in an officia...

Motorola Purchases RadioFrame Networks’ iDEN Business

Leading provider of telecommunication solutions Motorola Inc. announced on Friday that it had purchased the iDEN business from RadioFrame Networks which, as many of you might already know, is the provider of power efficient, lower cost iDEN technology. According to the former, RadioFrame Networks’ iDEN business is to be integrated within Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility business.Motorola is already known around the world for the proprietary iDEN solution it delivers to the market, saying it managed to last courtesy of its “innovative and differentiated end-user fast dispatch service and enterprise optimized talk-groups.” However, the new acquisition is expected to offer the company the possibility to enhance its push-to-talk technology roadmap plans even more. RadioFrame’s iDEN products should prove as great additions to Motorola's portfolio for multi-channel base stations, which are developed so as to “support non-contiguous spectrum allocations in the special mobile radio (SMR) business,” mainly aimed at the markets outside North America. Moreover, the purchase of RadioFrame Networks’ iDEN business is also said to enable Motorola to strengthen its operational capability, as well as the end-user functionality, and to enhance its expansion in a more...

Oscars Snub Michael Moore’s Latest Documentary

Michael Moore is, by now, a director that has probably become well accustomed to the idea that whatever project he comes out with, and especially if it’s a documentary, will be regarded as “uncomfortable” (to say the least) by many. However, even he hoped that the same would not apply for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which, for some reason, completely overlooked his latest film when drawing the list of potential nominees for the Best Documentary category, as the Huffington Post reports.“Capitalism: A Love Story” is Moore’s most recent film and, as fans must already know, it has been very well received. Moore, as noted above, is controversial enough to generate mixed reviews with his work but, this one time, all critics seemed to agree that his take on recession in “Capitalism” was nothing short of brilliant. Audience too loved it, more than his previous film. This, as easily imaginable, makes it almost impossible to understand why the Academy would not deem it good enough to include it on the short list of potential nominees for the upcoming awards ceremony. “Of the 89 documentary films eligible for Oscar consideration this year, 15 were selected for a short list of potential nominees. And Michael Moore’s ‘Capitalism: A ...

The Last Meal of Centaurus A

Centaurus A is a very active galaxy, whose core is currently producing a large number of stars. It is believed that, 200 to 700 million years ago, it collided with another similar structure, which it consumed. The remains of that galaxy are still being ground down in the core of the former, triggering a large number of peculiar phenomena, in addition to intense stellar formation. Currently, Centaurus A is at it again, cannibalizing a smaller spiral galaxy, which is already twisted, warped and bent by the massive gravitational interactions that occur between the two, LiveScience reports. At the core of Centaurus A is a supermassive black hole, with 200 million times the mass of our Sun, and roughly 50 times the mass of the black hole at the core of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. The structure is not far away from us. The entire galaxy is located just some 11 million light-years away, which in fact makes it one of our closest neighbors. The elliptical structure is currently gobbling up its newly found meal, which some astronomers believe it may be its last. A recent set of astronomical observations have allowed astrophysicists to look deep into the most obscured areas of Centaurus A, where the most massive amounts of dust are found. The studies were performed over a number of years, using the European Space Agency's (ESA) Inf...

Nokia Messaging Now Includes Windows Live Messenger

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced on Friday that users of its popular Nokia Messaging service would be able to enjoy the Windows Live Messenger on their homescreens. The company has included the widely known Microsoft instant messaging application in the push-email service so as to provide users with more communication options. “The world’s most popular instant messaging service, Windows Live Messenger, is now available via Nokia Messaging. Accessible through the Nokia Messaging Chat application, people worldwide can have multiple conversations simultaneously, change their status and personal messages, and manage their Windows Live buddy lists straight from their homescreen,” a recent post on Nokia Press Bulletin Board states. This is the first time when Windows Live Messenger comes to the Nokia Messaging service, and it is capable of providing users with tabbed chat windows, as well as with the possibility to call friends directly from their buddy list. Moreover, the installment will also offer them the notifications of new messages that pop up when the app is running in the background, so as to enable an enhanced multitasking experience. Users will also have the opportunity to enjoy features available on the desktop version of Windows Live Messenger, including...

Unmanned Spy Planes to Use Alternative Energy

Over recent years, robotic spy planes and unmanned drones have helped armies around the world take the best decisions for a specific situation on the battlefield. This ability stems from the fact that these aircrafts are perfectly capable of supplying their commanders with live feeds from the hot spot. Now, innovation reaches these devices as well. Experts are currently trying to implement renewable fuel capability in the precious devices, which could see them getting a longer range and increased stealthiness, LiveScience reports. According to scientists, air drones equipped with this type of capabilities could easily be used in civilian applications as well, such as for the monitoring of wildfires, or of protected areas, where endangered species roam. One of the main benefits of running an engine on renewable fuel is the fact that the noise levels are considerably reduced. In the case of military applications, spying on a target that is aware of your presence is pointless.Until now, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) commanders had to deploy their assets at very high altitudes, in order to counteract the noise problem. However, that will no longer be the case with the new approach, and so the eyes-in-the-sky will be able to supply ever more information than they do now. This is especially important when consi...

50 Cent Has All Arm Tattoos Removed

50 Cent has long stopped considering himself a rapper alone. What with his acting career starting to take off and the many other side projects he’s involved in, Fiddy is a bona fide businessman and he’s perhaps the first to say it out loud. However, before that, he is an actor who’s still trying to prove his worth with audiences and critics alike, and, it seems, his tattoos were holding him back, as ShowbizSpy reports. In a recent interview with the US media, Fiddy revealed that his ink, especially the one he got throughout the years on both his arms, while still gorgeous, was making it very difficult for him to give substance to his onscreen characters. More specifically, the rapper stressed, the tattoos meant a lot of time in the makeup chair, where stylists would cover them up. This, in turn, made whatever character he portrayed at the time less believable.“I took ‘em off. I’ve been on a few acting projects and they been making me get up… My call time is four hours before the regular acting talent because of the tattoos.” 50 Cent revealed. One project in particular made it necessary for him to undergo many sessions of laser removal because it’s a film close to his heart and for which, therefore, he wants to give it his best. Of course, this means that too muc...

Smithsonian Museum Receives Former Hubble Components

This May, the space shuttle Atlantis flew the fifth and final repair flight to the venerable Hubble Space Telescope. The changes weren't purely aesthetic. A number of instruments, including the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, or WFPC-2, were replaced with better ones. The observatory also received new spectrometers, as well as three new gyroscopes, which allow it to maintain its position at all times. The parts that were removed from the instrument were not discarded, but delivered back to NASA by the seven astronauts of the Atlantis crew. Now, the American space agency has decided that two of the instruments that were brought back to Earth should be displayed, so it gave them to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, in Washington, which will put the exhibits on display. The pieces include the WFPC-2, as well as the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement, or COSTAR, instrument, the Caltech-based Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announces. The lab is operated by the space agency. The two impressive instruments have spent more than 15 years in the coldness of space, before finally being returned to Earth for rest. “This was the camera that saved Hubble. I have looked forward for a long time to stand in front of this very instrument while on display to the public,&r...

Mosquitoes Employ Active Hearing

Scientists working with a new mathematical model may have finally figured out how it is that mosquitoes can hear the faint sounds of a female's flapping wings, but not become deaf when hearing louder noises. The University of Bristol research team has managed to unlock some of the remarkable features, but highlights the fact that more work is needed before more conclusions become available. Details of the scientific study appear in the latest issue of the Journal of the Royal Society: Interface, e! Science News reports. The active elements involved in mosquitoes' hearing are called scolopidia, and represent multiple individual sensory units. Insects have evolved various types of hearings, if compared with our own. However, their ultimate goals are the same as ours, to turn small energies of a transmitting sound wave into an electrical impulse. Acoustic energy may need a boost in mosquitoes, the researchers note, so it could be that scolopidia appeared to fulfill this very purpose. The sensory unit allows for a lot more of the auditory information to be converted into electrical signals, which are then transmitted to the insects' “central processing unit.” Toxorhynchites brevipalpis, a Tanzanian mosquito species, was used as a reference point for the new study. The scientists created a simple microscopic ...
