The motherboards introduced by ASUS for the micro ATX line are the M4A78L-M LE, M4A78L-M and M4A78LT-M LE. These products' different features make each of them especially suited for certain arrays of tasks, although all three have common features that give them a certain level of versatility in any domain. All use the AMD 760G + SB710 chipset. These products employ AMD-developed chipsets and can support AM3 and AM2 (+) central processing units. Specifically, the M4A78L-M LE and M4A78L-M use the AM2+ socket and support DDR2 memory, while the M4A78LT-M LE uses an AM3 socket, thus being able to handle newer AM3 processors and DDR3 memory units. Although each differs from the other two through having or lacking certain resources and features, they all possess two DIMM slots for dual channel memory setups, an ATI Radeon HD 3000-class IGP, one PCI-Express x16 (which supports CrossFireX), a Pci Express x1 and two normal PCI slots. The M4A78L-M LE and M4A78LT-M LE have more similar features with each other than with the M4A78L-M in the way that both are better suited for office or business setups. They have more reduced display connectivity options compared with the latter, but still have a D-sub or DVI port and all the legacy and parallel ports. They also boast 6-channel au...

We already know that this year's Spike Video Game Awards will do more than just praise those that have been already launched and that some premiers will be present. The first official look at Halo: Reach will be hosted by the show and now another title with a powerful franchise behind it has been teased. Kotaku guest editor Geoff Keighley has announced that a brand-new Star Wars game will be unveiled by Spike TV. He has posted a link to the teaser trailer, but, no matter how hard you'd scrunch your eyes, play the clip frame by frame or listen to the most obscure audio detail, you won't find anything there concerning this upcoming Star Wars game. The entire trailer is made up of footage from already-announced titles, with the only unreleased one being the massively multiplayer online role-playing game from BioWare, Star Wars the Old Republic. The definite answer to this puzzle will come no later than December 12, at the Spike Awards, but, until then, we're free to sit around a camp fire and try to figure out which is the most possible candidate for this game. The chances that this is a new IP are small, but not improbable. The gaming industry has seen a serious slump for the last months, with a lot of studios cutting back on their costs, employees and even on entire branches of their companies. So, it's very doubtful...
One of the most important things to do when discovering a new species of animals or of ancient hominids, in the fossil record is to depict it as accurately as possible. For many years, paleoartists, which specialize in creating drawings or sculptures of creatures that lived millions of years ago, have accompanied archaeologists and paleontologists in their research trips, offering them basic clues of how the fossils looked like when the animals that created them were still alive. Now, the artist's tool bag is also expanding, with the advent of modern, 3d modeling technologies, Wired reports. “What’s driven my work has always been, ‘I want to see that thing alive. I want to see that world'. Computer graphics is developing to the point where, in movies like 'Benjamin Button,' you don’t know what parts are not digital,” explains paleoartist Viktor Deak. He was responsible for reconstructing some early hominids and his work was broadcast on the PBS network in November, as part of the Becoming Human series of documentaries. He explains that computers offer artists the ability to control their work in manners that were never-before thought possible. In addition to offering a representation of our ancestors, the models can also make them move and interact, which is not something that can ...
Lawsuits aren't anything new for Google, but one in Italy could mean jail time for several Google employees if they're found guilty. The four men are charged with several privacy violations and libel over a user-uploaded video, hosted on Google Video in 2006. The prosecutors are now asking for one year in jail for three of the executives, David Drummond, senior VP of corporate development and chief legal officer at Google, George Reyes ex-CFO at the company and Peter Fleischer, global privacy counsel, and six months for libel for Arvind Desikan, senior product marketing manager at Google. As expected, Google is defending its employees and believes the case to be without merit. “We did exactly what is required under European and Italian law,” William Echikson, a Google spokesman, told Bloomberg. “We took the video down when notified by the authorities. Seeking to hold neutral platforms liable for content posted on them is a direct attack on a free, open Internet and could spell the end of Web 2.0 in Italy. We will defend and support our employees.”In 2006, several students from a Turin school uploaded a clip to Google Video of them bullying a classmate with Down's syndrome. The video was up on the site for almost two months before being taken down by Google. The compan...
Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system has been widely appreciated by both media and consumers, thanks to its more user-friendly interface, ease of use, and other features that enable it to run smoother than the software giant's previous OS, the infamous Windows Vista. In now appears that some PC vendors, Acer included, are also showing their satisfaction with the new OS. Acer, the world's second largest vendor of personal computer systems, has just announced that the launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, has been positive for year-end PC sales.According to a recent news report, by Reuters, Taiwan's Acer Inc. has seen a positive impact on sales, with the launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, last month. However, the gains were within expectations, the article said. In addition, the company's CEO said it was keeping its revenue outlook and maintaining a forecast of 15 percent sales growth for the next year.“When we saw the features of Windows 7, we already knew that it would be good for demand,” Gianfranco Lanci, the company's CEO told reporters on Thursday. “We have no plans to revise.”Acer isn't the only PC vendor that has seen a boost of sales, after the launch of Microsoft's appreciated Windows 7. The aforementioned report also talks about the world's num...
A new iPhone worm, based on Ikee, has been detected in the wild, but unlike its predecessor, it is malicious in nature. The new malware intercepts and steals online banking information from mobile consumers and connects to a master control server in order to receive instructions. At the beginning of this month, the world saw its first worm for the extremely popular iPhone mobile device. Dubbed Ikee, the piece of malware was written by a 21-year-old Australian, named Ashley Towns, allegedly for demonstrative purposes.Ikee infected jailbroken iPhones running OpenSSH with the default "alpine" password, an apparently common security oversight Mr. Towns wanted to point out. The young programmer released the source code for his controversial creation and went on to be hired as an iPhone application developer by a company. But, even though Ikee only affected iPhones in Australia and did nothing more than change the wallpaper to a picture of Rick Astley, security researchers questioned its actual impact on security. Many of them warned that it could lead to the creation of more dangerous malware and, as it turns out, they were right. It only took cybercrooks two weeks to take the code, improve it and create a new malicious worm.Ikee's offspring, called "Duh" targets iPhone users that engage in onl...
The Windows operating system is, by no means, an indispensable kitchen utensil for the time being, but just give Microsoft a little while and the company will make it happen. With computers becoming ubiquitous throughout all rooms in the home and with Natural User Interfaces evolving at a fast pace, Windows-powered machines will soon enough be an integral part of any kitchen along with the fridge and the cooking stove. With Windows 7 Microsoft has made an important step in this direction, as the operating system allows users to interact seamlessly through multitouch and voice. And thanks to a new app from Betty Crocker, a Windows 7 powered computer might just be the perfect accessory for putting together a great meal. Users with a passion for cooking, but also professional chefs looking for inspiration in the kitchen can now access the Betty Crocker Digital Kitchen Assistant, a free application made available for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. The new app is designed to allow Windows users to tap rich content and services on the Betty Crocker website right from their desktops. “We’re constantly re-thinking how we offer useful content to consumers in their homes,” noted Mike Bettison, web site manager, General Mills. “By partnering with Microsoft to create a unique Windows applicat...
Sophos’ Graham Cluley has updated his blog with news that the author of the Ikee worm, emerged earlier this month, has gotten himself places, thanks to his malicious feat. Cluley doesn’t care much for the hacker and would rather see him pay for his actions, rather than get rewarded.“The author of the world's first iPhone worm must be feeling pretty chirpy today, because he's managed to get himself a job as an iPhone application developer,” Cluley writes. “21-year-old Australian Ashley Towns, revealed that he was going to join mogeneration [...] on his Twitter feed earlier today,” the post goes.“Despite admitting writing the Ikee iPhone worm, and personally initially infecting some 100 iPhones with the malware that could gobble up victims' data allowance, Towns has not had his collar felt by the long arm of the law,” the security expert continues. “Lets not forget that his worm not only made unauthorised modifications to the iPhones of its innocent victims (requiring a fiddly repair), and contained some elementary bugs, but it also provided the template for the more dangerous Duh worm which attempts to convert iPhones into a botnet and steal financial information,” Cluley upholds. The Sophos researcher admits malware authors, like To...
Scientists at the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are currently investigating deep retrofitting schemes which, they say, could help boost the energy efficiency of selected homes by 30 to 50 percent. They caution that the results of their studies would not necessarily mean that all homes will be suited for such schemes, but that a large number will be. The DOE supports these projects through a $1.4 million Building America Program grant, PhysOrg reports.
“Deep retrofit is a fairly expensive upfront proposition, but can be one of the best investments available to many homeowners. We're targeting homes that are 15-35 years old – homes that are ready for new windows, heating and cooling units, appliances and maybe even solar panels to push their homes closer to near-zero energy consumption. Then we want to monitor these homes, analyze their energy consumption and celebrate the progressive vision of this region,” says Jeff Christian.
The expert is the ORNL Buildings Technologies researcher heading the project and also an East Tennessee Quality Growth Council board member. He adds that at least ten homes in the region will be involved in the new investigations, which will seek to determine the extents of the improvements that could be made in general housing...
